What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag (Free Checklist!)

As I hit 34 weeks this week, I’ve decided it’s about time I start getting serious about preparing to meet this little dude. That means washing clothes, prepping diapers, and of course, getting our bags ready. Deciding what to pack in your hospital bag can be tricky as you’re trying for that balance between too much and too little. I especially felt this pressure since our hospital is a 45 minute drive from home which means forgetting something entails Mr. Man leaving us for at least 2 hours or having to send family to find it. Both of these options require me knowing exactly where said forgotten item should be, which isn’t exactly an ideal situation.

After much thought and lots of Pinterest browsing, I finally have our lists. Half the battle, I know, but a start nonetheless. I’ve also put together a cute checklist to keep track of it all!

What to Pack in Your Hospital Bags

Toiletries Bag (for both of you!)

  • Toothbrushes
  • Toothpaste
  • Deodorants
  • Shampoo & conditioner (travel size or in travel bottles)
  • Body wash (travel size or in travel bottles)
  • Comb and/or brush
  • Wetbag for dirty clothes
  • Contact case(s)
  • Contact solution
  • Glasses & case
  • Razor
  • Maxi pads
  • Nipple cream
  • Nursing pads
  • Prenatal vitamins
  • Hair ties
  • Makeup

Mom’s Bag

  • Robe
  • 2 Nursing friendly tops
  • 2 Pairs of yoga pants
  • 10 Pairs of panties
  • 4 Nursing friendly gowns
  • 2 Nursing bras
  • Boppy pillow
  • Breast pump

Dad’s Bag

  • 5 Shirts (at least 2 comfy enough for sleeping)
  • 5 Bottoms (athletic shorts and/or sweatpants)
  • 3 Pairs of socks
  • 5 Sets of underwear & undershirts
  • Flip flops
  • Camera, with full battery and empty memory card (don’t forget charger or 2 sets of batteries!)
  • Computer & charger
  • Phone chargers

Diaper Bag

  • 2 Swaddling blankets
  • Newborn going home outfit
  • Size 0-3m going home outfit
  • Baby wipes
  • 4 Pairs of socks
  • 6 Onesies + pants
  • 5 Burp cloths
  • 6 Bibs
  • 4 Sleepers
  • Wetbag

Some things to note:

  • I LOVE hospital socks, so I’ll be using those. You may want to consider bringing your own.
  • The clothes are enough for a 3 day, 2 night stay. I wanted to be prepared for a cesarean if it happens, but this also means we have a couple changes of clothes if all goes as planned, which I’m sure could come in handy.
  • I’m buying new toiletries and making our travel sized bottles ahead of time so we don’t have to pack anything last minute.
  • I plan to labor in the hospital gown and mayyyybe a nursing bra. Going off of how I handle being uncomfortable, I don’t see me wanting to wear anything at all, so be sure to consider what you think you’ll want to wear when making your own list.
  • I’ll be wearing pajamas and my robe pretty much the entirety of our stay, because I don’t like having pants on in bed. The shirts and yoga pants I’ve packed are for when we go home or if I get a wild hair and feel the need to “dress up”.
